Take-Out Review #2: Yesterday’s Diner (COVID-19 Special)

Updated: Apr 6, 2020

443 Jericho Turnpike, New Hyde Park, NY 11040

Food: Toasted Bagel "All The Way"

“Nova scotia lox, cream cheese, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, olives and garnish.”

$13.95

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Yesterday’s Diner has held its standard of being open 24 hours. You can go in there at 3 a.m. and order one of these. Additionally, they deliver from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.

The sandwich comes with an amount of fixings that resemble a vegetable platter. Large chunks of lettuce, sliced tomato, sliced green pepper, chopped up onion, olives, and a big slab of salmon all blanket a large, toasted, lightly buttered plain bagel.

I prepare my bagel according to my preference. I cream both sides of the bagel liberally. I place the slab of salmon on, put some green pepper and onion on, then fold the salmon over. I layer a handful of lettuce on, and some more tomato and onion. I will keep adding vegetables until the sandwich can no longer handle it. I usually still end up with a handful of vegetables leftover to enjoy as fry substitutes throughout the meal. Feel free to eat the sandwich in separate parts or as an open-faced sandwich if it is too large for you.

The plain bagel is warm, crunchy and buttery on the outside. Its smooth exterior is what touches your tongue first. Your teeth then chomp through the thick, soft, chewy inside of the bagel. Next, comes the cold cream cheese, and immediately after the slick and smooth salmon fills your mouth. Next, if you can imagine your mouth being filled with more food, the vegetables come in. The crunchy, cool lettuce, the juicy tomato, and the crunchy green pepper hit you like refreshing ocean waves. All of these textures and sensations hit the compartments of your mouth and taste buds in about four seconds on a slow bite. The amount of stimulation you receive orally is ecstasy-inducing.

The generous amount of vegetables, the generous amount of salmon, and the large bagel make this meal seem massive. No need for fries with this deli classic. The seemingly high price for this meal is 100% worth all of the fresh and delicious food that comes with it, and I highly recommend.
